I have so many story's I could tell about Terry I don't know to begin but I will
try. It was 69 or 70 when I got my first really cool job at Dallas Honda North
working in the make ready dept. I was 16 and had a love affair with motorcycles
since I was 8 or 9 so working at a Honda shop was like a dream come true. This is
how I had the pleasure of meeting and making two life long friends by the name of
Teddy and Terry Poovey.
After a few days of working there I found out that Teddy was a flat track
racer and I must have asked so many questions that he finally asked me if I
wanted to go to a race with him at a place called Ross Downs on Friday night
so we leave work early and head towards Garland I asked him where we were
going he said we have to go get his little brother Terry. On the way over
there I found out that Terry raced also and had just moved up to the 100cc
class when we got to their house Terry was waiting in the front yard raring
to go. I took one look at this little kid getting in the van couldn't have
been more than 10 or 11 years old jumps in and says hi I am Terry Poovey who
are you well after the introductions on the way to the to the track I am
thinking to myself how good could this kid be. By the the end of the night I
knew this kid was truly gifted and over the years he proved time and time
again that he was a cut above the rest of the field where ever he showed up
to race.
Watching him ride a motorcycle was like watching poetry in motion and every
time I thought I had seen his best he would do something else that if I
hadn't just seen him do it I would not have believed that a human being could
that on two wheels.
I raced and traveled with Terry until 1981had to give it up because of
marriage and kids. I look back at and sometimes wish I had a dollar for every
mile we logged on the road from the east coast to the west coast and up north
and I would have to say that the best race I have ever watched him in was the
year he won the National Short Track at the Astrodome in Houston starting
from the back row.
The best thing about Terry is his heart is as big as his smile. If you needed
help with anything he would the first to offer, he has always been a down to
earth kind of guy and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.
Terry I know in my heart in a couple of weeks you will be reading this so I
tried to keep it as clean as possible, Teddy and Kathy be strong he will need
you more than ever when he starts getting better and you have got to believe
that he will. I think about Y'all every day and give positive thoughts and
prayers for Terry every day so hang in there Champ  Much Love from Austin  David Cupp

Hay Terry...

Think back, Mike Kidd, Jimmy Lee, Guy McClure, Mike Green, Jimmy Johnson & my older brother Donny Winn. A bunch of other guys, just cant remember all them right now...!   Now think back, & down, the rug-rats watching everything all you guys did, Matt Green, Gary Kidd & Me, Ronny Winn...? You gotta remember...! We thought all you older guys racing in the 250 & open class was hot stuff...! Mainly at the track everyone was at every Friday night, Ross Downs... I guess the Devils Bowl & Waco tracks was pretty good, and all them indoor on concrete races was a blast, but Ross Downs & Don Kidd had it going...! I remember all the crazy things you guys did on and off the track...! I remember riding my bicycle down Bedford-Euless Rd one day and you was driving by, slammed on your breaks, tires squealing just to scare the crap outta me, and it did...! Hope you remember the egg on your new Dodge Maxie Van...? hehe...!!! I remember setting at Jack'N'The Box, there in Hurst lots of nights and watching the crazy stuff you & my brother did, & Id better not say, there might still be some law against some of that stuff...? lol... (no one was hurt folks...!) How time has flew by, I cant believe your still even able to race, and win ta-boot...! Them where the good days, racing at every track we had the money to make...! Im now the master plumber for Hurst-Euless-Bedford School District and starting to feel like Im getting old some days, so to see you still racing & winning at least makes me feel not so old...! A few years back Donny told me you, at the time, was working at DFW Honda, I was buying a Honda XR80 for my kid, but not at DFW Honda, when I found out you worked at DFW Honda I went there and bought the XR80, you where gone racing so I told the owner the only reason I was buying the motorcycle there was because I was a fan of yours and I wanted you to receive credit for the sale, he said he'd credit the sale to you...! That XR80 is setting in my garage right now, still looks & runs great...! Hang in there Terry, you have fans, some of the people that have already posted in this Poovey stories & Guestbook, I remember well...! Get Well Soon...!!!
